California artist, Hilda Vandergriff, art career began after retiring as a high school secretary from the Visalia Unified School District. She learned to draw and paint from art teachers in the Central Valley and by taking art workshops along the Central Coast.
Hilda’s art inspiration is nature; insects, flowers, animals and landscapes. She looks for the beauty in all her subject matter that ultimately will translate into an original cherished piece of artwork.
Hilda paints watercolor, pastel and mixed media paintings. Floral and animal paintings have brilliant bold colors. Her Asian inspired paintings are on a variety of rice papers. Papers have visible fiber textures, gold speckles, silver treads woven into the paper and Chinese silk. Suminagashi, an art technique that produces a unique marbling effect is in paintings.
Hilda is passionate about her art and shares her techniques through art demos and workshops. She has taught children art classes in watercolor and Chinese brush painting. She donates art to community organizations to help their causes. She and her husband have a home in Morro Bay. She participates in the Central Coast Open Art Studio Tours.
