One Thing Leads to Another

|
People frequently ask this glass and mixed-media artist, ”How do you come up with all these ideas?” Larry will share his inspira- tional sources and creative process in making his eclectic drawings, paintings and sculpture at our May meeting.
Larry Le Brane’s eclectic designs blend a love for manipulating unusual materials and detailed crafts- manship with a streetwise and academic background. After a childhood of sketching and a high school without art classes, Larry received his M.F.A. from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and taught fine art at Orange Coast Community College for 30+ years.
|
Now living on CA’s Central Coast, he cleverly combines colorful fused-glass, metal, wood, leather and found bjects into well crafted fine art. Larry’s a selective scavenger haunting thrift shops for castoffs that he combines with colorful fused glass into eye pleasing creations. He also teaches art workshops throughout San Luis Obispo.
Enjoy Larry’s whimsical designs at The Gallery at the Network, Harmony Glassworks, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art and LarryLeBrane.com. “Stop by May 3 for an entertaining afternoon. |

CHET AMYX
April 5th 2011, 3 - 5pm
Many, many, many years ago I was sent off to college with an assortment of old used art materials supplied by my artist/teacher father. Learning to make do with "recycled" material (this was perhaps the beginning of the concept of recycling in our modern era - 1957) I inadvertently became if not the first, at least one of the first, recyclers in a period when using something old was scoffed at. It was the post war period and the start of consumption (think Andy Warhol and Pop Art).
Among these old items were tubes of water color pigments that were hard, dried up. I thought, "Thanks Dad, now what? You sent me with these 'materials', but no money." So, out of this conundrum, I "invented" watercolor sticks!
By drawing with these "sticks" on wet paper I developed a very personal semi-abstract style that I used in earning my Masters Degree. For my demonstration I will go back in time and use this approach in creating an expressive water color painting.

Expresing your creative mind, Anita Hampton, March 1, 3 - 5pm
|
|
|
"As a professional painter and instructor for many years, I am very excited to be a part of this new adventure in developing new ideas to help the painter bring consciousness to the unconsciousness at Dave's Art Farm in Arroyo Grande. It truly is a place that plants and cultivates the seeds to creativity: the slogan of the farm.”
Hampton and David Saari, Professor Emeritus of American University, will be sharing their innovative and new teaching methods as it relates to “self expression” and the “creative mind” of the Artist. Over the past two years, Hampton and Saari have been developing classes utilizing their new teaching methods with great success. They share, from the artist's point of view, their findings on how the science of neuroscience, philosophy and psychology benfits the artist's ability to fully express their ideas on canvas. Hampton offers brief painting demonstrations through California.

KATHY MILLER
OCTOBER 5TH 2010

Through diversified techniques and various media, I try to capture the feelings my subjects inspire. Preferring the experience of outdoor painting, compositions primarily include natural landscapes and florals in a fresh spontaneous approach. The mystery of the work goes beyond the mere duplication of the image to include spontaneous accidents, drips of paint of or an instinctive gesture with a brush. |
| Most of my art education was through workshops with a wide variety of instructors. Several classes were taken over the years at Bakersfield College. The first class was 27 years ago, an adult education course at the local high school. Art is a continuing exploration of techniques and how to use them to express our views of the world around us. .....Kathy Miller |

JOHN BARNARD
“There is so much to paint. I get up in the morning and can hardly wait to start. I am not a formula painter. I don't worry about style. I have fun. Painting is different from writingwriting is an intellectual thing. Painting for me is spontaneous. All that stuff is in thereI just let it flow out and don't worry about it.
For me watercolor is a happy, joyous medium. The colors are clean, transparent, flowing and bright. The paper is beautiful, so I let it show and sparkle. Too much detailed drawing can stifle the imagination. I want you to see the brush strokeseven the drips. I want you to know how I feel about the painting and to see the subject in a new and different way. It's not enough to be technically good; a painting has to have emotion in it.
Painting is an addiction. I paint every day. If I don't paint I go crazy. Art is important.”

MARSHA REBSTOCK
Phyllis Case-Bennett, master Chinese brush artist was teaching workshops at Cuesta College, and I became a regular there, learning what impact a flick of the brush can have. Tony Couch, for 7 years, drilled me in the principals of design, and Mel Stabin, a painter who paints with tremendous heart, inspired me to become a “loose” woman. Henry Fukuhara’s line: “Show me the shape!” is one I think about every time I paint. And, of course, John Barnard, whose workshops and style brings it all home for me, in respect to getting to the mood and essence of whatever it is you are trying to capture. |
